How to pick the right moisturizer for your skin type
By: Carla Snuggs
Like searching for a good facial cleanser, it can be a challenge to select the right moisturizer for your skin. One moisturizer may break you out while another is too greasy on your skin. Many times this has to do with matching the right moisturizer to match your skin type.
With skincare expert Sarah Neumann, MMS, PA-C as our guide, Posh Beauty Blog has learned how to select the correct face moisturizer. Sarah Neumann is the owner of Ahwatukee Skin & Laser, a general and surgical dermatology practice in Phoenix, AZ, and she provides the following expert tips to help you select the right moisturizer by skin type:
Oily Skin
If you have oily skin you want to avoid ingredients like mineral oil, petrolatum and lanolin which can increase oil, shine and promote blemishes. Adding ingredients like talc, silicone, and salicylic acid help to decrease oil. Try Cetaphil oil control moisturizer with SPF or Clean and Clear Morning burst with SPF.
Dry or Dull Skin
To repair dry, damaged skin start with moisturizers that contain ceramides, humectants like glycerin. Choices include Cetaphil, Cerave, Kinerase, Journee and TNS dermal repair by Skin Medica. Dull matted skin requires exfoliation including glycolic acid, vitamin a or retinol. Try skin script retinol scrub, skin script glycolic pads and or SkinMedica Tri-retinol Complex, then follow with CeraVe Pm or Skin Script Peptide Moisturizer.
Combination Skin
Combination skin requires more knowledge, look for oil free hydrating options like Jan Marini Bioglycolic Lotion, Biocream or gel by Neo cutis or Kinerase Pro Therapy Lotion.
Sensitive Skin
If you have sensitive skin avoid parabens, fragrance and additives. Try Vanicream, MD Forte Replenishing Hydrating Cream, Cetaphil or CeraVe lotion.
Aging Skin
If you need an anti-aging moisturizer, choose products with alpha and beta hydroxy acids, retinol, antioxidants and or proteins or peptides. Try out MD forte facial lotion II, Skin Medica Essential Serum, Jan Marini Transformation Cream, Tri-retinol Complex with Dermal Repair Cream by Skin Medica or Revale night cream.
