Anti-aging skincare tips for your 20s, 30s and 40s
By Carla Snuggs
There are so many anti-aging skincare products on the market from day creams, night creams and serums and moisturizers. It can really make your head spin. It also begs the question: How do you know what anti-aging skincare products are necessary for you and at what age?
Posh Beauty Bog tapped two leading skincare experts: Jwala Karnik, MD., Chief Medical Officer at Suneva Medical, Inc. and Susan M. Stuart, M.D., board certified dermatologist and founder and medical director of La Jolla Dermatology and Medical Spa in San Diego, CA. Dr. Karnik and Dr. Stuart provide the following expert tips to shed some light on how and when to add anti-aging skincare products to our skincare regimen.
When is the right time to start using anti-aging skincare and beauty products?
“The best time to consider using anti-aging products is before you even notice signs of aging,” says Dr. Stuart. Remember that we sustain most of the damage to our skin from the sun’s ultraviolet rays by age 18! It may take many years before we see the effects to our skin so prevention is the key to success. Dr. Karnik says that sunscreen is actually one of the most effective anti-aging tools, so it’s never too early to start. Just be follow the directions on your sunscreen bottle with regard to using SPF on infants.
Do anti-aging skincare products reverse signs of aging or do they slow down signs of aging?
They can do both, according to Dr. Karnik. “A product formulated with an emollient tretinoin, like ReFissa® can help moisturize the skin while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time. An antioxidant is a great example of a product that is more targeted towards prevention by eliminating some of the toxic molecules that can lead to skin aging,” says Dr. Karnik.
Anti-aging Skincare Products in Your 20s
In our 20's, we should first practice good sun protection. Dr. Stuart recommends that you apply moisturizers each morning with an SPF of 30 as part of your daily skin regimen to avoid further damage from unprotected sun exposure. Keep well hydrated with water and use water based makeup that is fragrance free and non-allergenic. “Skin is still resilient in your 20s, but a multitasking BB cream is a great option to even out skin tone and prevent sings of aging with antioxidants,” says Dr. Karnik.
Anti-Aging Skincare Products in Your 30s
In our 30's we begin to see the first signs of aging as our complexion may start appearing rough and blotchy. “Daily night time application of retinal cream or serum will help to even out the complexion, soften the skin and reduce the fine lines of the face,” says Dr. Stuart. Retinols also shed the pore clogging outer layers of the skin reducing adult acne breakouts.
Always continue your use of sunscreen. Dr. Karnik suggests “Regenica® Day Cream with SPF 15. It’s a great, light moisturizer that allows you to easily layer on makeup. Fine lines can start to show in the delicate eye area at this age, so it’s a good idea to start specifically moisturizing this skin if you haven't already started, suggests Dr. Karnik.
Anti-aging Skincare Products In Your 40s
In our 40's, signs of aging become more prominent as we start to notice loss of volume in the face with hollowing of the cheeks and thinning of the lips. "Later in this decade we begin to see sagging of the skin of the face and neck as well. It's important to remember that the skin is the largest organ in the body and continually sheds the outer layers throughout one's lifetime so maintain those healthy skin habits you began in your 20's and 30's. Several great skin products are good choices here including Neocutis gel or cream and SkinMedica TNS," explains Dr. Stuart.
You want to get serious about attacking those lines and wrinkles that are inevitable. “An FDA-approved tretinoin for anti-aging is the strongest wrinkle solution you can get. ReFissa® is FDA-approved for treating not only fine lines and wrinkles, but also tactile roughness and mottled hyperpigementation. If dark spots are a particular problem for you, talk to your physician”, says Dr. Karnik.
