Mother's Day gifts for natural hair moms
By: Xotica Hair
For me, my mom has been my everything, and she’s worn her hair in its natural state basically all her life except for the one time she lost her mind and got herself a Jerry Curl; however, I digress. Anyway, with Mother’s Day fast approaching, I thought that I would put together a mini list of cool natural hair gift ideas that would be perfect for all those natural hair mommas.
Natural Hair Product Gift Basket
If your natural hair mom is anything like mine, (stuck in the 70s and 80s), she still uses SoftSheen-Carson’s Sta-Sof-Fro Hair & Scalp Spray to moisturize her mini fro. (Can you say antiquated?) Only God one knows where she still finds that stuff; and no matter how much I give her alternative suggestions for products to use on her hair, she still just won’t let it go. Yet, whenever she comes to visit, she always steals my moisturizers because she says she loves how they make her hair feel and keeps it so moist.
For momma’s still stuck in the 70s & 80s like mine, here is an opportunity to gift her with a basket of natural hair care goodies. While natural hair products can be pricey, selecting and introducing her to a few of your favourites will totally be worth it. Remember to cover the bases by including a good sulphate free shampoo, a deep conditioner, (a masque is optional) water based leave-in conditioner and or a water based cream moisturizer, a good protein treatment and your favourite sealing oil or butter. Feel free to add in a pretty note with instructions or tips on how and when to use, giving her the breakdown of the LOC/LCO method. While no two curly heads are the same, this starter kit/basket will give mom a great start to try her new regimen. One important thing is to make sure you select products that are easily and readily available for her to purchase on her own once she has used up all of her gifted products (of course if she likes them); this way she can easily pick them up herself at her local BSS and continue on with her new regimen.
Here’s a list of my favs that I would include in the basket:
(*disclaimer: I have very thick 4c hair)
Shampoo: Crème of Nature Argan Oil Sulfate free shampoo
Deep conditioner: As I am Hydration Elation Intensive Conditioner
Leave-in: Oyin Handmade Juices and Berries
Protein treatment: ApHogee Two Step Protein Treatment
Cream: Qhemet Biologics Alma & Olive Heavy Cream
Oil: Olive Oil (sorry coconut oil but my hair hates you!)
Head wraps
Ok, I’m all about that wrap life and any chance I get to wrap my hair, it is done. I don’t have to be going anywhere; even if I’m just lying around at home, I wrap my hair. I think this is one of the things that I get from my momma. Mom too is always wearing something on her beautifully salt and peppered TWA.
For a momma that’s into head gear, a wonderful gift would be a beautiful Ankara head wrap. Ankara wraps are gorgeous and are relatively inexpensive, ranging in prices from $22 - $40, depending on where you get them. They also range in different colours and unique patterns as well. I suggest a series of them in various colours, (because personally, having just one is not enough) but definitely include a black based one, just for maybe a mom that may be a little more conservative and finds bright colours too flashy. Experiment with the other colours after you have selected a black or dark coloured one that you think she may like. If your mom is new to wraps, why not have an impromptu girly bonding sesh showing the different, cute and unique ways she could wrap her hair. Think of all the laughs you both will have while doing this; and if it turns out she’s not a huge fan of wraps, then she can always use them as waist ties/belts or tie it as an accessory on a handbag.
Make her an appointment to see a Natural Hair Specialist
Mom has been seeing her Barber for years now, and while he does an amazing job on her shape ups and cuts, she’s decided that it’s time to recreate her look by growing out her natural hair. Now, with the new longer length, she says she is stuck for styling ideas and stuck not knowing or remembering how to care for her natural longer hair (again except for using that Sta-Sof-Fro).
If your natural hair momma finds herself in a similar position or maybe she’s always done her hair herself, or have been going to kitchen beauticians most of her life (I’m not knocking kitchen beauticians), maybe it’s time to set mom up with a proper natural hair consultation with a Natural Hair Specialist in her area. This way she can have her hair assessed and she can learn more about her kinks and coils as well as some tips and tricks on how to maintain her natural hair, and keeping it lustrous and healthy. In addition to the consult, why not throw in a wash, condition and style to set her pretty head on its way.
While Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday, as they call it in the UK, shouldn’t be the only time we show appreciation to the great women in our lives, it’s historically been a day set aside specifically to let them know how much they are revered. So, for all of you that may be pressed for time or simply looking for a gift idea for a special natural haired woman that seems to have everything, choosing any one of these great natural hair gift ideas will help you show your appreciation and let her know that you were thinking of her and appreciate her.
